What are the criteria used by scholars to authenticate hadith?
Hadith scholars developed a rigorous methodology for evaluating the authenticity of prophetic traditions. This science, known as Mustalah al-Hadith, examines both the chain of narration (isnad) and the text (matn).
Conditions for a Sahih (Authentic) Hadith
- Continuous chain of narration (ittisal al-sanad)
- Integrity of narrators (adalah)
- Precision of narrators (dabt)
- Freedom from irregularity (adam al-shudhudh)
- Freedom from hidden defects (adam al-illah)
If a hadith meets all five conditions, it is classified as sahih (authentic). Missing one or more conditions results in different classifications such as hasan (good) or da'if (weak).
