Fasting during Ramadan is the fourth pillar of Islam and is obligatory upon every sane, adult Muslim.

Essential Rules

The fast begins at Fajr (dawn) and ends at Maghrib (sunset). During this time, a Muslim must abstain from food, drink, and intimate relations.

Etiquettes of Fasting

  • Eating suhoor (pre-dawn meal) and delaying it close to Fajr
  • Hastening to break the fast at Maghrib
  • Breaking the fast with dates and water
  • Increasing acts of worship, especially reading Quran
  • Giving charity generously
  • Avoiding arguments and foul speech
